Voices From the Council, November 2020

Regional Council, Voices

Mayor Georgia LordAs we prepare for the possible extension of the region’s transportation sales tax, we appreciate the conversations among municipal leaders as we work to develop an equitable Regional Transportation Plan. This is the first step to ensuring our region’s continued reputation for ease of mobility that helps support a strong economy.
— Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord

Mayor Kenneth WeiseThe 2020 NASCAR Championship Weekend comes to Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Nov. 6-8. The Valley of the Sun also is slated to host the Championship Race again in 2021 — a huge win for all our communities. The excitement and anticipation for this race is felt beyond Avondale, but in cities throughout the Phoenix metro region who are all doing their part to welcome race fans, and there’s no doubt that NASCAR has taken note!

Mayor Cathy CarlatPeoria recently opened the gates to Paloma Community Park, a treasured new amenity in North Peoria, just south of the Loop 303. This park is a testament to the power of collaboration and the transformation that can occur when local, regional and state entities work together for the benefit of the families we all serve. The way this park weaves into the Sonoran Desert shows our love and respect for the natural environment and offers a distinct sense-of-place. Our second phase will include even more amenities and additional regional connections to multi-use trails. Paloma Park is a place where love for the Arizona desert grows, and lasting family memories are created.
— Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat

Mayor Anna TovarTaking part in government is so critical to help us to continue to move our communities forward. All of us can do our part by voting, attending civic meetings, and running for office. The quality of government depends on the people in it, and the more people from our community that get involved, the better we will be.
— Tolleson Mayor Anna Tovar

Mayor John GilesWe are committed to doing all we can to help our citizens and businesses weather this storm. That’s why we have focused some of Mesa’s CARES Act funding to help small businesses stand strong through the COVID-19 pandemic. Through Mesa CARES, Mesa’s small businesses have been bolstered with financial support for rent and utilities, and access to a wide variety of free training, one-on-one business coaching and other technical assistance. We’re proud to have delivered these resources to help businesses withstand the fallout, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of regional partners like Local First Arizona, Visit Mesa, Maricopa County, CO+HOOTS and others who have a vested interest in the success of Mesa’s businesses. The delivery of this critical support, training and resources will not only help our businesses see their way through to the other side, but we hope it is setting them up to thrive.
